My wife asked me to create a Christmas card for our family to send out, and I came up with these two ideas. Problem is we never got around to actually printing one… oops. Maybe next year? If you’d be interested in purchasing, let me know. Merry Christmas!

Another Paris illustration – an experiment in colors, textures and composition. See my Instagram for the illustration process video. I’ve been down with whooping cough for the last month and it has given me time to do more personal work, and of course dream of Paris. I’ll be having an exhibition at Southern Virginia University soon, and I’ll be teaching Digital Illustration there this January. Exciting things are coming!

Often I’m lost in my own little mental world – my friends refer to this as “Coreyland.” Sometimes Coreyland is a good place where I can explore new ideas and be creative, but other times it distracts from my immediate life. The image of the boy in the castle is about this idea of being entrenched in your imagination. The other two images address this from the angle of smart-phones and how we’re often unable to enjoy the reality surrounding us because we’re lost in our work or the distractions of social media. Imagination and technology are both good things, but I think we should always seek balance and prioritize our friends and family over our accomplishments. In the words of Thomas S. Monson, “Never let a problem to be solved become more important than a person to be loved.”

I recently did a series of work inspired by the town I live in — Buena Vista, Virginia. Buena Vista isn’t necessarily a big tourist attraction, but it has a small-town charm and history and I think its a really beautiful place. I look at Instagram a lot and people posting photos of their exotic vacations, but often we don’t see what their day-to-day lives are really like. As I was walking to work one day, I felt inspired to do a series focusing on the mundane but intriguing things I see every day. Using the hashtag #mytowndaily, I posted every day for a few weeks, and I learned a lot and grew as an artist through the process. The series will be going on exhibition at Southern Virginia University soon — dates TBA. Here’s a selection of the pieces:

These are quotes I’ve designed/illustrated for my personal Instagram and also for Southern Virginia University.
“In matters of style, swim with the current. In matters of principle, stand like a rock.” – Thomas Jefferson
“One sees clearly only with the heart. Everything essential is invisible to the eyes.” – The Little Prince
“Trust your instincts. Unless your instincts are terrible.” – Vitruvius from the Lego Movie
“Becoming is better than being.” – Carol S. Dweck
